Brendan has been involved in early-stage ventures as a VC, Board member and entrepreneur for more than 20 years. Prior to Astraea, he was the founding CEO of PsiKick, a venture backed semiconductor start-up developing self-powering wireless sensors for the Internet of Things. From 1994 to 2007, he was an early-stage VC investing in technology start-ups in Silicon Valley and Europe. Since 2007 he has lived in Charlottesville where he focuses on building and supporting the entrepreneurial ecosystem. Currently, he is a Board Member of HackCville, a start-up ‘hacker den” for students who want to change the world thru self-directed learning and entrepreneurship and he also serves on the Board of the TomTom Founders Festival. Brendan received his B.S. in Finance from the McIntire School of Commerce at UVA.
Co-Founder & CTO
Daniel brings experience gained over a wide range of disciplines, with a consistent focus on developing and applying technology and advanced analytics to solve complex real-world business problems. Prior to Astraea, Daniel was the Director of Commercial Analytics at Elder Research where he provided analytics solutions and strategy for clients across numerous industries such as insurance, oil and gas, and healthcare. A decorated war veteran, Daniel served as an officer with specialization in Signal Intelligence. Daniel has degrees in Applied Mathematics and Advanced Analytics from NCSU.
Co-Founder & VP of R&D
Simeon has over 20 years experience as a software engineer and consultant, collaborating with scientists and engineers with innovative technologies in the laboratory to the commercial marketplace. These collaborations have resulted in dozens of conference and journal papers, two R&D awards, and a patent. His current interest is in the application of functional programming principles to the processes of data science, big data and distributed computing.
Co-Founder & VP of Engineering
Matt is a software developer and computer science researcher with over 25 years of experience designing, implementing, and deploying a wide variety of software system in technical areas that include highly scalable distributed cloud computing, large scale data analytics, optimal planning and control, computer network operations (CNO), agent-based computation, computational modeling of social systems, large-scale physics based simulation, and signal processing. Matt is a fan of design patterns, functional programming, and agile development processes. Additionally, Matt possesses an educational foundation in mathematics and physics that, combined with his practical experience building software systems, brings a unique ability to bridge the gap between research and development.
Co-Founder & VP of Data Science
Kim has over 13 years of experience working with organizations to improve their business decisions with predictive analytics on complex data sets, statistical methods, and software development. As an astrophysicist, Kim used novel data science and machine learning techniques to model cosmological redshifts of galaxies at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory and has authored 50+ peer-reviewed publications (six as first author) in top scientific journals. Kim received her PhD in Astronomy from the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
